Feminist icon Gloria Steinem will speak to state employees Tuesday as part of a virtual event, according to the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources.
State Department of Administration Secretary Pamela Cashwell will interview Steinem for the hour-and-a-half webinar, which will stream online beginning at 1 p.m.
The event marks Women’s Equality Day and is titled “A Conversation with Gloria Steinem: The State of Women.”
“Gov. [Roy] Cooper has made it a priority of his administration that our state’s 5.2 million women deserve equal opportunity, equal pay and equal respect,” State Human Resources Director Barbara Gibson said in a news release announcing the talk. “These are among the topics that Gloria Steinem has championed throughout her life.”
Steinem is the latest speaker to participate in the state’s equal employment opportunity lunch and learn webinars, but this is the first one to stream live on YouTube, according to Office of State Human Resources spokeswoman Jill Lucas. The speakers are not paid, Lucas said.
“They all are generous with their time and in sharing a timely message with an interested audience,” Lucas said in an email.
The broadcast will include American Sign Language interpreters and it will be available later for viewing at the YouTube link and through the Office of State Human Resources webinars page.
“We’re delighted to be able to provide this opportunity for state employees and the public,” Lucas said.
